what i won't eat wednesday

yesterday's post got me thinking about salmon (and fish in general) and how i used to be the world's pickiest eater. that's an overstatement but there were a lot of foods i wouldn't eat as a kid. i've made great strides in terms of at least trying foods out but there are still some things that i just won't eat. i decided for this week's what i ate wednesday i'd do a "what i won't ever eat - on a wednesday or any other day" edition. there are some foods that i simply have no desire to ever eat. some of them i've tried and decided i didn't like, others i just can't get behind. i know this isn't really the point of jenn's linkup but i have been in a rut with food lately so i know you guys don't need to see another taco salad and spaghetti squash dinner (which is what i actually ate yesterday). thanks for hosting, jenn!

oysters. i might have done a great job opening my mind to seafood and i really am starting to enjoy mussels and clams, but oysters i just can't imagine liking. and they're not cheap so really there's no reason for me to force myself to try them since the last thing i need is another expensive habit (nut butter and quest bar addiction, anyone?).

cashew butter. i came, i tried, i disliked. i love peanut butter. i enjoy almond butter thoroughly. i like coconut butter and i think if i cared to pony up the $12 i'd probably like nuttzo. what really surprised me was that i love cashews. like...give me a bowl of mixed nuts and all the cashews will be gone immediately. cashew butter though? not a fan.

kale. i tried to like it. i put it in soup and it wasn't terrible. i tried it as chips and i hated them. this is one of those "i should eat it because it's SO GOOD FOR YOU OMG" but at the end of the day that's not how my diet works. sure, i eat vegetables a lot of the time because i feel like they're good for me and not necessarily because i'd prefer a pile of broccoli over a pile of fries (yeah...that never happens), but i honestly dislike kale and the fact that it's a superfood isn't enough to combat that. i'll stay kale free from here on out. someone can go ahead and eat my quota of that and i'll happily consume enough bell peppers, cauliflower and asparagus for all of us.

pate. i am all about processed meats, and i'm not afraid to admit it. give me a hot dog covered in chili and cheese and i am a happy camper. essentially i think pate is probably just like a hot dog made with fancier meat but...shudder. gross.

sweetbreads. what is the point? again, like oysters - these are expensive, they're a delicacy, and i'm sure in the right application they can be tasty but for what reason would i ever want to eat these?

pomegranates. if there's a fruit that's more annoying to prep i don't know what it is and i don't think the arils are ever worth the battle to get to them. thanks but no thanks, i'll stick with the easy to consume fruits.

any foods you never eat? or are there foods you do eat because you "should"?

  1. I agree with your entire list! Haha I won't eat salmon, even though its really good for you. It just tastes like plain fish and I hate it. I have tried! I eat vegetables because they are good for us, but I really don't enjoy them :(

  2. I cannot STAND cashew butter either, which surprised me since I love cashews, too. I don't like tuna fish from a can (or any meat from a can actually...freaks me out and the smell is just eeesssssssshhhhhhh). I don't really like melons or bananas (except bread) or oranges (except juice), and lima beans? Just no. Beans in general besides garbanzos fall under the same category.

  3. Well, I won't eat anything on this list and about a zillion other things. I thought about doing a post about things I won't eat. I realized it would take me 6 years to get through the whole list though. But nobody will ever convince me to eat some of this weird crap I always see in the blog world. No way, no how.

  4. I can't do kale either. I mean I like the kale chips in stores (except for their price tag) but using it in recipes or on my own is a fail. utter fail. I love oysters though, raw and slimy. YUMMM

  5. Yuck, oysters are gross. I love pomegranates, but they are definitely a pain. I will never eat olives or sweet pickles.

  6. I don't get the point of oysters, mussels are gross, I only like kale in chip form, all nut butters rock but pb wins by a landslide and pomegranates are delicious I just avoid eating them because they are expensive, messy and time-consuming!

  7. I actually like a lot of the foods you listed besides pate.. I just don't understand.

I'm not a fan of chicken in a can or many types of pork (especially pork belly, gross) but besides that I don't have many food aversions.

  8. Kale I won't allow anywhere near my mouth and I'll never understand how people stand eating oysters. The texture and consistency alone makes me squirm. I'm all for being an adventurous eater, but I draw a line there.

  9. LOVE this post idea!

I obviously do not eat meat or fish since I am a vegetarian. I also do not eat mayo..something about it just freaks me out. I will eat vegan "mayo" but not the real thing. Other than that, I am pretty open to most foods, which is so odd for me to say (I used to be super picky)!

I have yet to try cashew butter, but I really want to. Soon enough!

  10. I have no problem eating meat, but I refuse to eat lamb or veal. I absolutely will NOT consume baby animals. NO way no how. (Grown up animals, however, are definitely a different story. Haha). I also really can't stand pretty much any variety of almond milk other than Whole Foods's 365 Organic Original Almond Milk. Everything else I've tried is sicknasty, ESPECIALLY that unsweetened crap. It's so salty! Who wants to drink something salty??

  11. I can't get into the whole clam/ muscle/ oyster business - they're super slimy and just ick! And pate oh heck no... I haven't tried kale and don't have a burning desire to despite all of the hype it gets - it looks so tough, I think I'd prefer it in chip form if any :Z

  12. I actually hated oysters until this past summer when I gave them another shot...I think it all depends on where you get them from though...not all seafood joints are created equal, that's for sure! Lol I'm not a huge cashew butter fan on it's own (which is weird, because, like you I LOVE whole cashews), but I do I like mixing it into dishes and making cheeze sauces out of it.

I absolutely HATE radishes and I've tried my best to like tahini, but I really just don't get the hype!

  13. I absolutely hate cooked celery. Haha that is a pretty bad one but the only thing I can think of right now! I love it was but the texture when it is cooked just makes me gag.

  15. I just found your blog and think its great! I love that you post healthy things with humour. I cannot agree more about the pomegranate and have been hearing about kale so much lately that in considering trying. I may feel the exact same way you do though haha.
