thankful thursday 1.17.13

i think i have finally begun to shake this all-encompasing funk that has been like a gray cloud following me around this week. is this directly related to the proximity of the weekend? probably, but i'm not going to complain. i talked to tex on the phone last night and he was almost alarmed by how good a mood i was in. just so you know - it's not a good sign if people are shocked by how happy you seem. that indicates you are not happy enough the rest of the time. i don't want to jinx anything but i'm hoping this good mood lasts. as usual, it always helps my mood to link up with jessie's thankful thursday post.

i'm thankful for...duh. obvi. this is the best thing to happen to my kitchen since...well maybe ever. i've coveted the vitamix since my roommate from a few years ago had one. i was afraid to use hers because it seemed like such a serious appliance and i didn't want to break it. we did bust it out one cinco de mayo for margaritas and that's when i first fell in love. and though i fell in love with a lot of things that night due to tequila consumption, i knew my love for this piece of machinery was true and not simply driven by alcohol. i am so thankful i now have this in my kitchen. i performed a ceremony last night where i cleaned my old (shit) blender thoroughly and put it away in a box high on a shelf in hopes that i never have to use it again.

i'm thankful for...la tortilla factory wraps. these things are my jam this week. i have been eating wraps for lunch every single day and i am loving them. i don't know why but they feel so much fancier than a sandwich. plus you can turn em into a sort of pizza if you bake them and that's also delicious for dinner. i'm almost out of them so i'll need to stock up again at the grocery store this weekend.

i'm thankful for...rapid rewards points. seriously. i dropped a crapload of money on some flights last week and i was feeling super financially irresponsible but it makes it a lot easier to swallow when i look at my rapid rewards balance and see it going up. at least i know i'm (in a roundabout way) saving up for another flight in the future.

(don't be intimidated)

i'm thankful for...my health. i am EXTREMELY wary to put this out there because i feel like i'm jinxing myself but people at school have been dropping like flies. we had over 20 absences in the middle school yesterday (out of 65 students) and lots of teachers are getting sick. i do not think it is a coincidence that i eat (relatively) healthily, i work out regularly, i focus on getting sleep when i need i, i drink a ton of water and i have not felt even remotely sick, not even an inkling of the sore throat/flu that seems to be overtaking school. now that i've said this i'm probably going to get sick in texas this weekend and that would be totally deserved.

(doesn't mean i won't give myself a boost every now and again)

i try my very best not to get high and mighty about making healthy choices. i abhor those people who sit there and judge someone else for not being healthy. eat your damn wendy's, it doesn't bother me (except that the scent of your french fries is extremely tempting and no i don't mind if i do have one or two). do i wish you made a healthier choice for yourself? sure, but i also know that me telling you it's not healthy or shooting you disgusted looks will not make you actually be more conscious of your choice next time. i of all people know that the desire to be healthy has to come from inside or it'll be a bunch of misguided attempts that are doomed to failure. i am incredibly thankful that i haven't gotten sick and i do attribute it to my (mostly) healthy lifestyle. sorry, that was a slightly obnoxious little pat on the back, but hey we can't be 100% modest all the time. gotta recognize when the hard work seems to be paying off a bit.

what are you thankful for this week? have you gotten sick? if so i'm sorry and i will be sending non-sick vibes in your direction!

  1. I think I may of said this yesterday, but man girl I am so jealous of your vitamix! You are one lucky person!!!

    1. thanks! i'm still going strong in terms of avoiding the sickness and if i get sick after i get home, that's fine by me. a day off work wouldn't be awful :)

  2. Good for you for not getting sick! I hope you can continue to stay healthy- that's not a good sign when almost 1/3 of the entire school is out! Is a vita mixer the same thing as a regular blender? I'm kind of confused by it...
And since I've been home, I've had a wrap for lunch every single day too. And I love it. For some reason they're just better than any sandwich I would make with the same incredients. I might have to try the pizza idea... that's smart!

    1. i don't know why they're better but they definitely are! i think because there's more real estate for fillings in a wrap than a sandwich.

  3. It's hard to avoid germs in a school setting but keep it up :)

  4. Healthy is one of those things that's different for every person, so you're so right that nobody should judge another person for any choices they're making! I'm also suppperrr jealous of your Vitamix. I want one so badly.

  6. Ahh keep drinking that Vitamin C!!! People in Chicago were really sick the two weeks before Goofy and I avoided them like the plague, drank lots of Emergen-C, and got lots of rest. Thankfully, I didn't get sick!

  7. Glad to hear that you're feeling better, Molly. I went through that same mystery funk, and it's finally starting to lift. I guess there was just something in the air. And while I've managed to avoid coming down with the full-blown plague that seems to be sweeping the nation, I've been battling a small bug for the last little while and I'm definitely hoping that it doesn't get any worse.

    1. i'm glad it cleared the air too and i'm super glad you've avoided the plague! i can't believe how many people are sick - it seems way worse to me this year than it has been in the past?

  8. I know what you mean about being happy with yourself for having healthy habits but not wanting to preach too much to others about it. I feel like some of my friends are always complaining about feeling like crap all the time but it's no surprise considering the way they (don't) take care of themselves. You are totally right that it has to come from within and be their choice to make a change. Crossing my fingers you make it through the whole season without catching the bug!!

  9. I love baking my tortillas and adding pizza sauce and toppings to them. They make for the perfect easy lunch or snack. I also love making breakfast burritos with them. So versatile and so yummy! :)

  13. You know, I came down with a cold on New Year's Eve, and when I was getting sick I realized that I hadn't actually been sick in months (I had a brief encounter with the stomach flu in March...while in Mexico on a mission trip...no, I didn't drink the water...so yeah. That was fun. And by fun I mean hellishly awful whaddup last way I wanted to spend my last spring break EVER). But yeah. When I was younger I was the queen of colds. I pretty much had a perma-cold. But the last cold I had (before the NYE one) was at the beginning of November 2011...aka a long time ago. And I really wondered if the fact that I've made a conscious effort to eat good food, work out, etc. made a difference.

Also, can I just give you a standing ovation for that last paragraph of this post? I had to stop reading some blogs I used to read because it drove me BONKERS how they'd be all, "omg. Yesterday I saw someone eat McDonald's and I wept. How can you put that in your body?? What's wrong with you?!?!?!" Yeah. Judgey pants can come off, thanks. Just because you #eatclean all the time doesn't mean a) that everyone has to and b) that everyone has the ability to. So A+ to you for not being that judgey person :)

    1. thank you bethany! glad you hear you agree. i hate judgers because i think it's just meanness for meanness sake since it's clearly not doing anyone any good. i love talking about getting healthy and being healthy in the real world but if someone doesn't ask i'm not about to tell. doesn't do a damn bit of good.

  14. i have heard so many great things about la tortilla factory! i totally need to check out those wraps. i have been known to do pizzas in the oven with flat out wraps! so good. once i did a greek one and used hummus instead of sauce!
i too am grateful that with all the sickness going around i still have just had a couple of tiny coughs but so far with plenty of sleep and clean eats i have been able to keep a full-on sickness at bay! i think "nipping it in the bud" is so important as soon as one feels a cold coming on.

  15. Love that last part. I never want to be that annoying health nut that judges everyone and makes rude remarks left and right. I think you worded that perfectly. I so agree with the wrap thing. It looks great, and it totally feels 10x more fancy haha. Have a great day!

  16. Actually, you should probably take care to be careful when it Texas. The flight itself is perfect for communicable droplet carried illness, and going from cold weather to hotter weather never seems to bode well for keeping healthy. I'm sorry ... being around sick people all day has totally corrupted me. I never used to think about germs, and now I see them EVERYWHERE.
I think that these thankfuls are pretty fabulous. You're building quite the life for yourself, my dear. And I love to see it forming. :)

  18. It's so true, I feel like a lot of people judge other for not being as healthy. You're right--for them to switch to more healthy decisions, they have to want it from the inside out and your dirty looks aren't going to change their mind, besides changing their mind to think you're a bitch. Glad you're healthy and not getting the flu! I'll be praying that this fact doesn't change. :)
