recap: best body bootcamp week 1

well, phase four of tina's bootcamp is 1/8 over and i feel awesome about it. this isn't surprising considering how much i loved it during round three, but i was really nervous about how it would go considering i'm also in the midst of half marathon training for the rock n' roll half in march. i had ambitious plans for this week and i am going to pat myself on the back because i think i did really well.

here's what my plans/workouts looked like for last week, starting with last sunday through yesterday.

sunday - 3 mile run with my brother in miami (weeeeeeee!!!) rest. here's the thing - miami is hot. and we were up until 2 am with traveling/checking into multiple hotels in miami so tim and i weren't up early enough to run before it was hot. we ended up walking around miami a lot and that coupled with the great workout i got lifting my mojito glass from the table to my mouth was a great workout. upper body for the win.
monday - workout a with cardio bursts.
tuesday - 3.5 mile run (outside with jess!)
wednesday - 6 x 400 @ 5k pace / workout b (HOLY SHIT this was hard and sweaty)
thursday - 3 mile run (boring treadmill run)
friday - workout c OR rest (probably rest) - decided not to rest since i rested sunday
saturday - 6 mile run

this week's plans will look a lot like last week:

sunday - resting all day up on my couch
monday - workout a with cardio bursts
tuesday - 3.5 mile run
wednesday - 35 minute tempo run / workout b
thursday - 3 mile run
friday - rest (traveling to texas and i have a feeling i won't be able to make myself get up early to work out but if i do, i'll shift up saturday and sunday's workouts to friday and saturday and then rest as usual on sunday)
saturday - workout c with cardio bursts OR 3 mile steady state run
sunday - 7 mile run (hopefully outside in houston!)

another ambitious week but this past week made me hopeful about tackling this week. i've got to say i'm really loving these shorter runs. i wrote about my new idea of normal earlier this week and i think this is just proving to me what i already knew about myself - i love lower mileage with more strength workouts. i definitely like running longer distances but being able to fit in strength workouts as well rather than simply doing cardio all the time makes me feel awesome and strong and i love that.

my goals were drinking a lot of water (five liters a day) and being nice to myself. i chugged like a boss and was also super kind to myself so i'm checking off both as successes.

goals for this week: 1. floss every night. i have fallen off the wagon in terms of my oral hygiene and it is time to get back on the oral-b bandwagon. really it's pure laziness. it takes all of 3 minutes to floss (i have retainers so the process involves threaders which extends the time it takes me, i'm not really that inept - i know most people can floss in faster than three minutes) so there's no excuse. 2. STRETCH. for the love of god. i am super lazy about stretching and it's killing me. not actually but it is not doing my hamstrings and ass any favors. so i'm going to stretch after every workout.

what are your goals for the week?

  2. Yayyyy for stretching. Actually I hate stretching but I really do need to do it. Maybe we'll just have to yell at each other a ton so we'll stretch the right amount :)

    1. i think that's exactly what i need! tell me to run 8 miles and i'll go do it - tell me to stretch for 5 seconds and i won't because i "don't have time"...ridiculous.

  3. Looks like a good week of workouts! I'm super bad about flossing, too. My dentist just yelled at me for it. She said it helps if you do it in front of the TV? I've yet to try it. You know what's great stretching....YOGA ;)

  4. Hahahahahaha last Sunday's workout made me smile and remember yet again why I love you :) Awesome job on this week, love! Idk what my goals are for the week...sleep? Yes, that would be a good one....and go easy on myself as far as workouts and job go perhaps? Workout wise, I'm doing better about listening to my body but not so good about taking an extra day or two off when sick, which is probably why I'm still sick haha...and learning how to work with the boys one on one, esp since little man is 3 months old and babies are scary, will be a challenge, so I want to keep in mind that this is a whole new learning experience, and it's ok not to know what the hell I'm doing and ask for help!

  5. I'm super lazy about stretching too, and boy, oh boy, do I need it. This week, I'm definitely making stretching/foam rolling a serious priority. My body needs it.

  6. Flossing is a good goal. I don't know why I hardly ever floss... It's so easy! I love your orangish workout top in that picture? It is so cute!! I love flowy tops like that; they're so comfy to work out in.

    1. me too! flowy tops are my jam for workout clothes and non-workout clothes alike so i love that they're becoming part of lots of workout lines.

  7. I think lifting a mojito glass is an excellent arm workout. In fact, the only upper body workout I have done all week is fork to mouth and wine glass to mouth. Works for me. I need to someday try a bootcamp or plan like this to actually walk me through strength training workouts because I still have no idea what I'm doing at the gym.

  8. I used to be horrible about flossing from the time I left high school to the time I graduated from college. Then I started getting cavities....and it turns out those are so not fun. I am now an avid flosser! It is definitely worth it to take that little extra time to get it done. And seriously, is it not amazing how much crud you get out of your teeth from flossing AFTER you have brushed your teeth?? Kind of scary!

    1. i hate having cavities too, i'm with you on that one. and you're right - it's horrifying the amount of junk that comes out. okay i'm convinced!

  9. I've gotten better about stretching ... I just pull my laptop onto the floor with me and play around on twitter or daily mile or read a blog or two (usually all of the above) while moving my legs into different poses. I had TERRIBLE tendonitis this summer from not stretching, so I'm super diligent about it now.
I'm trying to roll BBBC into marathon training -- I liked week one of it, but we'll see how it goes as my mileage gets higher. What I do know is that I'm FINALLY taking care of my muscles properly, and I like the way that the circuits/weights feel, so I'm feeling super motivated. Eating like a boss and motivated -- pretty much the best feeling ever.
I like how you're owning your new normal -- taking what you love, making it work for you, and creating a flexible schedule that is totally realistic. Progress? Methinks so!! :D

    1. i am SO SO SO happy, especially the eating like a boss part. making progress is the best, isn't it? :)

  10. Nice job this week! I am with you on the stretching. I suck at stretching. I some how convince myself during the week that I don't have the extra 3 minutes to stretch and that I must shower and get back to work asap. Today I stretched for about 3 seconds but was so hungry that I hopped in the shower so I could eat quicker. SO DUMB!

    1. haha it's AMAZING how i can talk myself out of stretching so easily. not this week - hopefully i will get into a habit during bootcamp because its definitely a habit i need.

  11. Great job w/ your workouts this week. It's good to see that you took Friday as an active rest day with your brother after all the traveling instead of forcing yourself to run the 3 miles.

p.s. lifting a glass can put a strain on your muscles. You gotta be careful, Ha Ha =)

    1. thanks girl! and i will be very careful when lifting glasses. wouldn't want to tear something :)

  12. Stretching is the best. I got a lot better at consistently stretching during my half marathon training/round 3 of BBBC, and I really think it made a huge difference in keeping me uninjured. I got a foam roller for Christmas and have tried to befriend it, but mostly I just hate its existence because it makes me go "Ow." Haha. I do try to foam roll, but since stretching tends to be less painful, I prefer that, especially when I'm all lactic acid-y (like yesterday. Tried to roll out the quads and could've cried. This is what I get for not stretching on Saturday. Bad Bethany!).

    1. i think it always makes a difference for me too so i really have no idea why i am so full of excuses when it comes time to do that. i have a foam roller too. i can count on one hand the number of times that has been pulled out of its spot in my exercise basket of goodies.

  13. Mmmm mojito me. Cheers to being kind to yourself! I def need to work on stretching. I have stretching ADD! When I do workouts solo I rarely stretch at all. I get so bored so quickly. I need to try it in front of the TV or something!

    1. yes please! i'd love to have a mojito with you. and in just a week and a half (give or take!) we can make that a reality! as for stretching - i did it tonight in front of the tv and it went much better :)

  14. Ugh, I don't wanna talk about the dentist... This morning’s appointment went, well, it went. Have to go back for cavities in a few weeks and to start the Invisalign. Yay and nay :P You're such a stud for fitting it all in hooray for a trip to Texas this weekend!
